Phasing out of contributions to the Local Programming Improvement Fund (LPIF)

The CRTC is gradually reducing contributions to the LPIF

On July 18, 2012, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) released the Broadcasting Regulatory Policy 2012-385.

The CRTC has decided to phase out the Local Programming Improvement Fund (LPIF) over the next two years.

As a result, starting September 2014, certified broadcast distribution undertakings (BDUs) will no longer be obliged to make LPIF contributions as a percentage of their gross annual revenue.

In September 2013, Videotron adjusted its billings to reduce the contribution from 1% to O.5%.

As of September 2014, LPIF contribution fees will be completely abolished and no longer appear on invoices.

The adjustment will apply to customers who are currently obliged to pay said fees, i.e. those livings in the Greater Montreal area, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Chicoutimi, Gatineau and Granby.
