Connection problem

Can my router affect the speed of my Internet access?

Yes. Only the most recent routers have the minimum elements required to deliver Videotron Ultimate Speed Internet access. These include 100 Mbps (100Base-T) or 1 Gbps (1000Base-T) Ethernet and WAN ports, and processors capable of supporting these speeds. Most residential routers do not meet these criteria. You might be asked to connect your computer directly into the cable modem to help Videotron technical support diagnose your problem.

First, reset the router by unplugging it and then plugging it back in. If the router was to blame, the speed will be restored.

Router options like Home Network Defender can considerably reduce your Internet access speed. If you performed the speed test and the results were below the speeds offered by your package, if you tried to connect the wire directly into the router and, finally, if you checked all other possible sources of the problem, restore factory settings. Then reinstall the configuration CD without activating Home Network Defender.
