Telephone fraud

 

TELEPHONE FRAUD PREVENTION

Telephone fraud is a problem that can affect residential users, companies or telecommunications service providers.

 

Different forms of telephone fraud can occur, and we would like to make you aware of this offence to prevent you from falling victim to it.

 

Long-distance fraud

Does your company use a telephone system? Long-distance fraud can cost you dearly if you don’t take the necessary steps to protect your system.


In the enclosed fraud awareness letter you will find the general security measures that should be taken to protect your telephone system. The list is not exhaustive, and is given for information purposes only. Videotron encourages you to contact your interconnector to make sure that your telephone system is sufficiently secure.

Telephone fraud is a crime. If you think you’ve been the victim of fraud, we advise you to inform your local authorities immediately.


Change your passwords immediately and contact your interconnector to secure your system.

 

You should also report fraud incidents to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.

 

Caller ID spoofing


Caller ID spoofing is the practice of displaying a name and telephone number that are not that of the caller, on the recipient’s Caller ID display.


- Like email spoofing, Caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to be coming from any phone number.

 

Even though Caller ID spoofing is not illegal, it can be used by ill-intentioned people to give credibility to their call.

 

A Caller ID display alone is not sufficient enough to properly identify callers. Please be careful.

 

If you have been the victim of Caller ID spoofing for fraud purposes, please report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Harassing phone calls

If you’ve received harassing phone calls, trace your calls using Call Trace (*57), then contact the police so that they can investigate the matter.


Procedure
- Hang up after answering the call.
- Pick up the phone and wait to hear the dial tone.
- Dial *57 and wait for the recording to acknowledge the call trace.

 

This service only allows you to trace the last call received. It also works for calls where the Caller ID was blocked as per the caller’s request.


Videotron only relates the information it receives from the Call Trace service to the duly mandated authorities. Please contact your local police authorities and give them the date and time of the traced call.

 

WARNING: Fees will apply every time you use the service (whether you call the police or not).
